Unnecessary loss of life leaves gaping hole in nine families

It has been a tragic week on Irish roads. One of the weeks you really want to push to the back of your mind — but it would be irresponsible to do that.

Recession stresses are being picked up by children

It was shocking to hear last evening that every day in this country, a teenager is attempting to or managing to commit suicide because of the feeling of impending gloom that has fallen across this country. Pieta House which is currently the country’s only centre for the prevention of suicide, released the details last evening. It is ideally placed to learn the reason behind this upsurge in young people attempting to take their own lives. In the past, many coroners have blamed the rise in suicide on the rise in alcohol consumption and there is still a lot of truth in that. However the trend among young people in the past year is that teenagers, whose stage in life anyway has always been inextricably linked to feelings of angst or joy, are giving up on life, because they fear that it will never get as good again economically.

Culture binge, part 1

We headed to The Set Theatre for the opening night of Devious Theatre’s production of Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay on Wednesday last week. Another winner from Devious, who seem to be able to master any style of theatre at the moment. I vaguely remember seeing the play in The Abbey back in the seventies. At one stage a full sized car was driven on to the stage, complete with mobsters and machine guns. There wasn’t room for any such antics in The Set, but the ‘on again/off again’ saga of Dave Thompson’s moustache made up for that.

Never underestimate the power of giving

It’s fair to say we’re all pretty broke, and sometimes it’s just not possible for us to dole out money to charities, even though we’d love to. But it doesn’t mean we can’t help out a little.

Pure rubbish!

One of my favourite spots to walk or gently jog my two dogs is in Kilfane Woods just outside of Thomastown. So last week I was greatly saddened and disappointed to have found this beautiful place sullied by shopping bags and plastic boxes full of bottles and cans just dumped by the side of the path.
